History

Who is G.W. Northcutt?

On January 31st, in 1886, Grover Wilson  Northcutt was born. He later became a businessman and successful farmer. He had many different farm animals. He plowed his garden with his horse, Nell, well into his eighties always providing tomatoes, squash corn and watermelons for family and friends. He worked on the Gandy Bridge in Tampa, Florida, during the depression to be able to feed his family after friends and acquaintances were unable to pay him for goods they had gotten from his store. He chose to find work rather than declare bankruptcy. He became involved in the Clayton County education system serving on the Board of Education, as did one of his sons, Lowell, many years later. He purchased the first band uniforms for North Clayton High School at the urging of a son in law, Roy Hancock, a veteran, who owned a local grocery. He and his wife, Mamie Dailey Northcutt, had 14 children. They lost two to childhood disease and one who died from accidental burns from a yard fire. After the death of his wife in 1953, he cared for their youngest son, Glover, who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at birth and was developmentally delayed. He cared for him until his death. They had thirty plus grandchildren and had regular family gatherings. He was fondly referred to as “Papa Cutt” by his grandchildren. He taught Sunday School and later donated land for Second Baptist Church to move and build when the airport engulfed the original property in College Park. G W Northcutt Dairy, named for him and owned and operated by his sons, served the community and the school system for many years. His property, which included his home and the dairy, was located across the street from where North Clayton High School currently exists. G W died at the age of 91. So Happy Birthday, Grover Wilson Northcutt!!! You led a life well lived and left a wonderful legacy for your family and friends.

Congratulations G.W. Northcutt Elementary! You represent a legacy of hard work, determination and caring for your fellowman.
